An anonymous donor is offering to triple every donation to the Great North Woods Center for the Arts in Columbia received during the month of February. The arts center, headquartered at the former Our Lady of Grace Shrine on Route 3, is presently focusing on installing new electrical lines at the large chapel building at the rear of the property and transforming the interior into a performance theater and art gallery, as well as developing a large multi-purpose space for use by the community. The Great North Woods Center for the Arts on Route 3 in Columbia announces that it has received a very generous offer from an anonymous local donor to match and double all donations made to the Center during the month of February.
“For every donation, small or large, that we receive during the month of February, the anonymous donor will match it two to one,” said President Charlie Jordan of the Great North Woods Center for the Arts. “In other words, if we receive $100 from a member of the public, we will receive an additional $200–making the gift $300. There is understandably a level to which our donor will be able to match, but we feel confident that most donations will fit within the parameters their generous offer.”
The former Our Lady of Grace Shrine property was purchased three years ago by the GNWCA, which acquired three buildings and eight acres on the west side of Route 3. The Center, which is in need of many repairs and upgrades, is now home to the Carriage Lane Players (CLP), Connecticut River Artisans Group (CRAG) and the Great North Woods Center for the Arts. Many outdoor events have taken place at the Center and more are planned for this summer, taking advantage of the spacious and accessible location along Route 3 which allows for social distancing. Also being held at the Center are fiddle classes sponsored by the GNWCA’s Performance Committee, art workshops hosted by the CRAG, work and storage space for the CLP, and an arts and crafts fair sponsored by the Center.
Taking advantage of the COVID pause, the Center is moving ahead with extensive renovations to the property, including adding a new electric service line and complete electrical upgrades to the the large chapel building at the far end of the property, in compliance with code requirements.
Over the next several months the team will complete work on first floor renovations, where an indoor theater, art gallery and multi-purpose space is being developed.
While the Center has continued to provide the community with many free events during the pandemic, such as the Easter Egg Hunt, outdoor performances by the Weathervane Theatre's Patchwork Players, a drive-in Christmas event featuring Santa and Mrs. Claus and holiday light display, the Center’s renovated multi-purpose room will offer new opportunities for indoor events and gatherings in what planners say will be a light, bright space with modern amenities.
All money raised during the February matching-fund drive will go to the renovation and general operation of the Center, which is being overseen by a local team of arts-centric community members. The GNWCA is a 501-C3 non-profit and all donations are tax deductible. “We hope people will find it possible in these trying times to make a donation, no matter what size, to the Great North Woods Center for the Arts during February,” Jordan said.
