After a one-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the regional Celtic band Islay Mist Ceilidh returns with its traditional St. Patrick’s show this year in a new venue, the Great North Woods Center for the Arts in Columbia.
“Our Celtic group has been raising money for the GNWCA for something like 15 years now,” said Charlie Jordan, who serves as president of the GNWCA and also is a member of the musical ensemble. “We started with our first shows at Le Rendez-Vous Bakery in Colebrook. When we outgrew that space, we started having our mid-March show at the Colebrook Country Club.”
Jordan said that the Country Club was unavailable for the annual show this year. “We wanted to keep the St. Patrick’s Day tradition going now that the pandemic seems to be loosening up,” he said. “So we decided to go ahead with a show, but hold it at our new arts center.”
The concert is set for 7 p.m., Saturday, March 19, in the theater building at the Great North Woods Center for the Arts on Route 3. “Since it is a fundraiser for the Center, we are offering it as a free show. People can decide to make a donation at the door if they wish. We’re suggesting $10.”
Islay Mist Ceilidh is a regional ensemble which has performed at such regional events as the Lancaster Fair, First Night North in St. Johnsbury, the Moose Festival and locales like the AMC Highland Center in Crawford Notch. The music includes a variety of jigs, reels, airs and related tunes from the Celtic countries of Scotland, Ireland, as well as Canada’s Cape Breton region and elsewhere. “For our St. Patrick’s show we add in popular Irish songs like ‘Danny Boy’ and ‘When Irish Eyes Are Smiling,’ and we encourage the audience to join in.”
Current members of the band are Gerry Tobin (fiddle and keyboard), Art Hammon (flute), Jo Beth Dudley (flute), Cindy Martindill (flute), Debi Warner (bodhran), Kim Egan (fiddle), Monica White (fiddle), Donna Jordan (guitar and bodhran) and Charlie Jordan (fiddle and mandolin).
