The Great North Woods Committee for the Arts is planning a powerhouse weekend of music at the Tillotson Center in Colebrook on Saturday, Oct. 3 and Sunday, Oct. 4.
“If you want to see how differently stringed instruments can be played, here’s your opportunity as we bring back to Colebrook two of our perennial favorites, Camerata New England and the April Verch Band,” said GNWCA President Charlie Jordan. “On one hand you’ll be able to hear the perfection of Brahms performed by strings on the stage with the beautiful blend of a grand piano in the mix. Then on the next day bluegrass will come to the foreground with dynamic Ottawa stepdancing in the very same airspace. It will be an electrifying weekend.” Tickets for both shows are $15 each.
First up will be Camerata New England on Saturday, Oct. 3, with a 3 p.m. concert at the Tillotson Center. The concert will feature the works of Johannes Brahms (1833–97), first being Piano Quartet op. 26 in A Major, which includes 1. Allegro non troppo, 2. Poco Adagio, 3. Scherzo: Poco Allegro, and 4. Finale: Allegro. After an intermission, Camerata New England will return to the stage to perform String Quintet op. 111 in G Major, which is comprised of 1. Allegro non troppo, ma con brio, 2. Adagio, 3. Un poco Allegretto, and 4. Vivace, ma non troppo presto.
Once again Camerata New England brings a world-class aggregation of musicians to perform. This concert will feature Brazilian violinist Omar Chen Güey, Andrew Eng, violin, Linda Galvan on cello, Peter Sulski, viola, Mark Berger, viola, and pianist Evelyn Zuckerman. The concert sponsor is Larry Rappaport.
Then on Sunday, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m., the April Verch Band makes its fifth appearance in Colebrook when this talented Canadian and her band roll out an evening of music that will set feet to tapping throughout the theater. The show’s sponsor is LaPerle’s IGA.
Fiddler, singer and stepdancer April Verch knows how relevant an old tune can be. She grew up surrounded by living, breathing roots music. At an early age moving from exuberant stepdancer to fiddle wunderkind and silver-voiced singer, Verch came to be a brilliant interpreter of tradition is just as striking as the results. Practically from birth she was immersed in folk music and dance from her native Ottawa Valley, a melting pot of Franco-Celtic flavors brought by the hard-working loggers who settled the area. In her early teens, Verch found herself at Mark O’Connor’s fiddle camp. By the time Verch graduated high school, she’d won the Canadian Open Old Time Fiddle Championship and released a pair of albums, followed by a year at Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music and a win at the Canadian Grand Masters Fiddling Competition, which made her the first woman ever to take both of her country’s two top contests. From there she dove into a full-time music career.
Now on her milestone 10th album, “The Newpart” (released April 7, 2015), Verch digs deep into songs and tunes from the era before the often-mined mid-century heyday of bluegrass and folk. Harkening back to vaudeville and beyond, Verch and her fellow trio members pare down their arrangements, highlighting the simple pleasures of upright bass, guitar, clawhammer banjo, mandolin, voices, fiddle, and stepping in intimate conversation. At the heart lie Verch’s delicate voice, energetic footwork, and stunning playing, a trifecta of talents she brings together simultaneously for the first time on stage and on “The Newpart.” She’ll have copies of her latest album available for purchase during her Colebrook appearance.
